As a fourth generation Coloradan and avid outdoorsman, the inspiration for most of my paintings comes from the activities, landscapes, flora and fauna my state has to offer. I emphasize Colorado and western themes, including landscapes, wildlife, fly fishing, as well as portraits of family, friends or interesting faces. With my portrait work in particular, I tend to be a realist, trying to paint exactly what I see.

I have been interested in watercolor painting since high school. My art teacher at Wheat Ridge High School, Mr. Joe Wetherbee, a graduate of the Chicago Art Institute, was an inspiration to this budding artist. With his help and instruction, in 1965, my watercolor painting was selected by Scholastic Magazine as a regional finalist for the national High School Art Exhibition. Also, with Joe’s assistance, I was accepted to the Chicago Art Institute.  But my Dad refused to pay for me to become “a damn Beatnik artist.”

So while attending Colorado State University, I picked up art electives whenever my schedule permitted.  Then life happened. Marriage, kids, the Vietnam War, law school and a forty-five year legal career got in the way of my painting.

Upon retirement in 2017, I re-committed myself to my love of watercolor art.  I began attending classes at the art studio of Ms. Judy Patti in Littleton Colorado. With the encouragement and instruction from Judy and her fellow artist, Ms. Colleen Nelson, I have been able to elevate my painting skills and technique.  With the advent of modern watercolor pigments, I like to use rich and intense colors in my paintings. Some viewers often comment that they can’t believe my work is done with watercolors.

This website provides a sampling of my work.  I have created an in home studio where the original or prints of my pieces are available for viewing and sale by appointment. Contact me to learn more.
